Welcome to the Saturday Startup Stories blog

Here's what to NOT expect.

Welcome to the 1st Saturday Startup Stories post!

“Holy hell, I can’t believe this is happening.” — Me, just now, writing this.

Here’s the tweet that started this whole thing.

The idea for this series did not exist last week. I came up with the idea at 11:30am, in the gym, on Saturday the 15th. The timeline since that has been nuts.

  • The next day the above announce video was posted

  • 1 day later we had a group of exciting startups interested in being featured, including Magpie

  • 3 days later we had a few sponsorship offers

  • 4 days later my dear friend and insanely talented composer agreed to do the music for Season 1

  • 6 days later I filmed and edited the first episode with Magpie

  • 7 days later, I’m writing this

It’s beyond exciting to see the shared excitement for this series. I started it because I wished something like it existed. I love startup culture, specifically those that are trying to change the world for the better. To me, hunting through Twitter and tons of VC portco listings is the only way to find anything on new exciting startups. That sucks and is super time consuming, so this series was born!

The goal of the series is simple, give startups, both big and small, an external mini-doc about their mission. In each episode, I set out to answer 3 questions about any particular startup:

  1. What’s the problem it’s trying to solve?

  2. Why do the founders care about the problem?

  3. What’s the current problem they’re solving?

The episodes are filmed and edited on a Saturday then posted on Sunday, simple.

In addition to the video, there’s also going to be this blog-thingy where I share additional thoughts. Oh yeah there are also Spotify playlists, we use those to create reference tracks for our amazing composer to work off of.

What not to expect from this blog

Yeah so I’m not a traditional writer, in terms of writing for reading. I write for the screen, and rather than take years to develop my style before sharing any writing that is meant to be read, you’re sadly going to see it develop in real time over this blog. Here’s what to NOT expect.

  • Quality prose

  • Accurate grammar or perfect spelling

  • Me caring what you think about it

The goal of this series is super simple: film, edit, and post a mini-doc every Saturday. To do that, and not burn out, everything is about simplicity, clarity, and speed — including this blog.

So, what can you expect?

  • Behind the scenes images and clips that didn’t make it to the doc

  • Exclusive quotes from the founders

  • My thoughts on the startup, sector, and founders while making the doc

  • Crappy, yet authentic and quick, writing

Hopefully, one day, you smile when reading this blog at at least a 2-3% ratio of the time you’d spend smiling while reading a Tim Urban post.

Thanks for the support for Saturday Startup Stories thus far, keep on building the future.
